Most teams discover thundering herd problems the hard way: a popular cache key expires, and thousands of requests stampede the database at once. The usual fix is jitter on expiry times plus request coalescing, so only one caller rebuilds the value.
Retries make things worse unless every write is idempotent, meaning running it twice has the same effect as running it once.
